ESPN announce closure of 3D channel

“Due to limited viewer adoption of 3D services to the home, ESPN is discontinuing ESPN 3D.”

Not really a surprise to me given the total lack of enthusiasm at NAB this year.   You can look back on a blog post I wrote in 2010 when ESPN shot the Ducks in 3D.

I just got thru with working eight days of college baseball for ESPN as an A2.  Clearly they see their future on the web.  Most of the first weekend our full network level broadcast was only available online via ESPN3 and Watch ESPN (now coming to Apple TV).

Some folks at the OMPA networking event last night assured me that glasses-free 3D was just around the corner.  I’d bet my money on 4K rather than 3D.
